About Us

Inicio is a non-profit organisation that provides hands-on, technology focused workshops for teenagers. These workshops are designed to equip participants with 21st century skills, which are defined as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, information literacy, media literacy, technology literacy, flexibility, leadership, initiative, productivity, and social skills.

Our workshops range from five-day design sprints (based on the Google Venture methodology), teaching website design, simple robotics, to building electronic devices. The main overarching goal of our workshops is to ignite the students passion for technology by exploring different subject areas and career paths, by bringing theoretical concepts (those taught in maths, physics, or science classes) to life through practical hands-on learning, and equipping students with the skills necessary (critical thinking and complex problem solving, creativity, collaboration and communication) to succeed in the digital future.

Inicio’s events are run with the help of our network of mentors that are comprised of Swedish and foreign undergraduate and masters students. These students provide their technical knowledge, contribute other perspectives and cultures, and can serve as role models. Our mentors are passionate about technology, and they aid and support workshop participants from the start of the workshops to successful completion of the task.

Our workshops are designed to align with the existing school curriculum and meet the digitalisation requirements set by Skolverket. Inicio collaborates with schools, libraries, youth and community centres and other meeting places for education to organise hands-on workshops. Our workshops focus on technology, but allow students to see the connection between technology and other subject areas like art, fashion and music. We also connect technology to real life problems. We strongly believe that workshops like the Design Sprint Process will be the “go to” design methodology for businesses over the future – so the next generation should add these invaluable skills to their “creative toolbox” now.

Our largest event is Girls in ICT. Girls in ICT Day is a global annual event celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April and is designed to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of ICT. We host a full-day of workshops for more than 100 girls.

Inicio is a non-profit organisation empowering students to develop their dreams and talents. Our goal is for teenage students to get the guidance they need to choose the educational and career path that fits them best. We do this by a mentoring approach and hands-on practice for students and teachers in schools, providing a method to grow capabilities and empower youth. Our focus uses technology since it’s part of the majority of social aspects and careers.

Inicio collaborates with schools, libraries, youth and community centres and other meeting places for education to organise hands-on workshops. At our workshops the participants, mostly teenage students, can build electronics, 3D print etc and see the connection between technology and other subject areas like art, fashion and music. Our workshops are designed to align with the existing school curriculum and meet the digitalisation requirements set by Skolverket. We are also developing our own method for gathering data from how the workshop participants learn. Having learning analytics to understand what motivates students and to evaluate the effectiveness of digital skills training is of great value to all educators.

Inicio runs the Kista Mentorspace, a physical place where participants experience hands-on practice with digital technology and electronics, developing abilities for problem solving, individual learning style and personal growth through mentorship. Our network of mentors consists among others of Swedish and international master students who in addition to sharing their knowledge, provide a dynamic element to our workshops and events with a rich diversity in perspectives, cultures and languages. As today´s challenges often are global, Inicio is engaged in working to meet the global goals of the Agenda 2030.
